Dissertation Defense (Disputation)

A doctoral degree demonstrates the ability to conduct in-depth scientific research. It is based on an independent scholarly work, the dissertation, and an oral examination, the dissertation defense (Disputation). The dissertation defense takes place once the dissertation has been positively reviewed and accepted. It serves to present the main findings of the dissertation and consists of a presentation by the doctoral candidate followed by a scientific discussion with the members of the examination committee. Dissertation defenses at the Doctoral School NRW last at least 90 and at most 120 minutes.
