Responsibilities of the Directors

The Director is a decentralized body of the Doctoral School NRW. According to §25 of the Administrative Agreement, the Director's responsibilities include:

  • Leading and representing the department within the Doctoral School NRW.
  • Preparing the department’s development plan as part of the Doctoral School’s overall development plan, in consultation with the Department Board.
  • Ensuring the implementation of evaluations, the completeness of course offerings, and the organization of doctoral programs and examinations.
  • Preparing Department Board meetings and implementing its resolutions.

The Director is represented by one or more Deputy Directors.


Doctoral Candidate Representatives

The Doctoral Candidate Representatives serve as the main points of contact for the department’s doctoral candidates and represent their interests within the department and to the board of the Doctoral School NRW. They also act as the elected representatives of the doctoral candidates in the Department Board.

Responsibilities of the Department Board

As a decentralized body of the Doctoral School NRW, the Department Board has the following responsibilities according to §26 of the Administrative Agreement:

  • Making decisions on departmental matters not assigned to the Director or another authority
  • Overseeing all matters related to doctoral studies
  • Adopting the Departmental Regulations, the Doctoral Degree Regulations, and other regulations

Doctoral Examining Committee

The Doctoral Examining Committee is responsible for organizing doctoral procedures and is elected by the Department Board. Its term of office is three years.

Responsibilities of the Doctoral Examining Committee

Responsibilities of the Doctoral Examining Committee

According to §4(1) of the Framework Doctoral Degree Regulations, the Doctoral Examining Commitee, as a decentralized body of the Doctoral School NRW, is responsible, for organizing the doctoral procedure, in particular for:

  • Deciding on the admission of doctoral candidates
  • Appointing supervisors
  • Initiating the doctoral procedure
  • Appointing reviewers
  • Appointing members of the examination committee
  • Monitoring the timely progress of the doctoral procedure, including documenting the number of doctoral candidates

Recommendation Committee

According to §5 of the Framework Department Rules, the Recommendation Committee provides subject-specific evaluations for the admission of members and affiliates to the department. It is elected by the Department Board.


Equal Opportunities Officer

The Department’s Equal Opportunities Officer promotes gender equality within the department. She is elected by the Department Board from among all female members for a three-year term.
