Publication and Conference Grants

What is funded?

Under the Doctoral School NRW’s publication grant program, funding is provided for:

• the publication of the dissertation (monograph or cumulative dissertation),
• dissertation-related publications (fees incurred for publication in a traditional journal or for open-access publications in a recognized academic journal).

Who is eligible?

All doctoral candidates of the Doctoral School NRW are eligible. This includes candidates within the doctoral programs of the Doctoral School NRW as well as cooperative doctoral candidates.

Funding Amount

The grant amount is up to 3,000 euros per application and may be awarded a maximum of two times during membership in the Doctoral School NRW (maximum of 2 tickets).

All information applies under the condition that sufficient funds are available.

Application: Application Form and Procedure

Applications may be submitted semiannually by the specified deadline to the administrative office of the Doctoral School NRW in Bochum and by e-mail to David Ewald (david.ewald@pknrw.de). For the application, please use exclusively the “Publication Grant” application form. Incomplete applications cannot be considered.

Please note that applications from doctoral candidates who have already received funding through this program line may be given lower priority in subsequent selection processes.

Note on Cost Processing

Please note that publication grants are paid directly to the applicants. Upfront payments through universities or reimbursement by the Doctoral School NRW are not possible. This also applies to institutional agreements with publishers in which universities make advance payments.

What is funded?

Funding is provided for participation in national and international academic conferences for the purpose of networking within the relevant scientific community.

Who is eligible?

All doctoral candidates of the Doctoral School NRW are eligible. This includes candidates within the doctoral programs of the Doctoral School NRW as well as cooperative doctoral candidates.

Funding Amount

Under this funding program, grants are provided for national and international academic conference participation and may be awarded up to three times (maximum of 3 tickets) during membership in the Doctoral School NRW.

The amount of each grant depends on the location of the conference. A distinction is made between conferences within Germany, within Europe, and outside Europe. The maximum grant amounts are:

• up to 400 euros within Germany,
• up to 800 euros within Europe,
• up to 1,250 euros outside Europe.

In cases of active participation (e.g., presentation, demonstration, etc.), the conference fee may additionally be reimbursed.

Additional Funding Requirements

• Participation in a conference is not tied to any further conditions (e.g., presentation or talk), so attending as an observer is also possible.
• A maximum of two conference participations are tied to active participation requirements.
