Organization and Governance

The Doctoral School NRW is a public-law institution supported by 20 universities of applied sciences. Its structures are modeled on those of universities, and it enjoys the right to self-governance. The Doctoral School NRW is organized into central and decentralized units.

Central Units of the Doctoral School NRW

The central units of the Doctoral School NRW are:

  • The Executive Board and Management
  • The Board of Supporters
  • The Doctoral School Senate
  • The Scientific Advisory Board

These are supported and advised by committees and commissions as well as by appointed officers, such as the central Gender Equality Officer.

Decentralized Units of the Doctoral School NRW

The decentralised organisational units are the departments with their directorates and departmental boards. Further information can be found on the department pages.

Executive Board and Management

The Executive Board and Management constitute the central leadership level of the Doctoral School NRW. The Executive Board is responsible for preparing and making strategic decisions for the School. The Management makes operational decisions and oversees the day-to-day activities of the Doctoral School.

Board of Supporters

The Board of Supporters consists of representatives from the 20 member universities of applied sciences supporting the Doctoral School NRW. The board supervises the academic, programmatic, and financial affairs of the Doctoral School and ensures that the School fulfills its mandate.

Doctoral School Senate

The Doctoral School Senate is the highest democratically elected self-governing body of the Doctoral School NRW. It decides on fundamental issues and is responsible for adopting central regulations that govern the responsibilities of the entire School.

Academic Advisory Board

The Academic Advisory Board advises the Executive Board and the Board of Supporters on scientific and strategic matters. It forms the programmatic core of quality assurance by overseeing, supporting, and evaluating the fulfillment of the Doctoral School NRW’s mission.

Ombudsperson and Commission for the Investigation of Scientific Misconduct

The Ombudsperson, as a neutral and qualified trusted advisor, provides guidance to members and affiliates of the Doctoral School NRW on matters of good scientific practice. The Commission for the Investigation of Scientific Misconduct becomes active when the Ombudsperson cannot resolve a suspected case of scientific misconduct.

Commission for Responsibility in Science

The Commission for Responsibility in Science supports and advises members and affiliates of the Doctoral School NRW regarding research projects under their responsibility. It provides statements on ethically relevant aspects before and during the execution of research projects.

Gender Equality Officers

The Doctoral School NRW regards gender equality as a fundamental prerequisite for a modern, innovative, and excellence-oriented scientific organization. To support this objective, the Doctoral School has appointed a central Gender Equality Officer, who is assisted by decentralized Gender Equality Officers in the departments.
