Executive Board and Management
The Doctoral School NRW is led by an Executive Board, which is responsible, among other things, for ensuring compliance with laws and regulations and for making strategic decisions. The Management is a member of the Executive Board and is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Doctoral School NRW.
Executive Board
The Executive Board directs the Doctoral School NRW. It is responsible for ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, making strategic decisions, and organizing evaluations. Except for the Management, the Board is elected by the Doctoral School Assembly. In addition to the Chair, the Board comprises up to three further members as well as the Managing Director (without voting rights).
Responsibilities of the Executive Board
The responsibilities of the Executive Board are defined in § 18 of the Administrative Agreement establishing the ‘Doctoral School for Applied Research in North Rhine-Westphalia’. In particular, it is responsible for:
- Implementing the Doctoral School development plan
- Executing the resolutions of the Board of Supporters and the Doctoral School Senate
- Deciding on the allocation of funds
- Determining the nature and scope of the Doctoral School NRW’s collaboration with universities and concluding agreements with universities
- Promoting exchange among the department directorates and the members and affiliates of the various departments
- Issuing instructions to Management to ensure fulfillment of tasks
- Conducting evaluations
- Preparing meetings of the Board of Supporters, the Doctoral School Senate, and the Scientific Advisory Board
- Managing the public relations activities of the Doctoral School NRW
- Developing and expanding a crisis management system (.pdf)

Management
The Managing Director is appointed by the Executive Board in agreement with the Board of Supporters and in consultation with the Doctoral School Senate. It oversees the daily operations of the Doctoral School NRW and manages its administration.
Responsibilities of Management
The responsibilities of the Managing Director are defined in § 20 of the Administrative Agreement establishing the ‘Doctoral School for Applied Research in North Rhine-Westphalia’. In particular, it is responsible for:
- Leading the administration of the Doctoral School NRW
- Managing day-to-day operations
- Supporting the Executive Board, the School’s governing bodies, and the departments in their activities
- Supporting cooperative doctoral studies
- Advising universities of applied sciences, universities, and faculty members
- Reporting and documentation
