The department’s main research areas are ‘Cyber-Physical Systems’ and ‘Instrumentation & Control’.
In the area of ‘Cyber-Physical Systems’, the focus lies on networking and integration technologies, communication engineering, network architecture, embedded systems, internet technology, and multimedia communication.
In the area of ‘Instrumentation & Control’, the emphasis is on sensor technology, automation, control systems, and signal processing.
The interconnection and communication of cyber-physical systems take place, for example, via internet- or radio-based data infrastructures. Machine intelligence, digital infrastructure, software engineering, security and safety, sensor technology, and control theory in CPS environments, as well as value networks, play a central role in shaping intelligent technical systems.
The department’s research aims, on the one hand, to develop solutions that enhance the security of intelligent technical systems for users and protect them against unauthorized access. On the other hand, it provides approaches that employ intelligent technical systems to design safe and resilient infrastructures.
The Department of Technology and Systems was established by resolution of the board on June 19, 2020, and held its (virtual) inaugural meeting on June 22, 2020.
It emerged from members of the Graduate Institute NRW’s working groups ‘Digitalization in Business and Society’ and ‘Media and Communication’, which were founded in 2016 and 2017, respectively, and were dissolved upon the establishment of the Departments of Technology and Systems, Computer and Data Science, and Media and Interactions.
The Department of Technology and Systems supports research-oriented graduates on their path to a doctoral degree. It offers a structured doctoral program and promotes cooperative doctoral projects.
