Our Concept
At the Doctoral School NRW, we consider the doctoral phase not only a period of intensive research but also an important stage for building essential interdisciplinary skills. To support this development, the Doctoral School NRW – partly in cooperation with the participating universities – regularly offers workshops and information sessions in four thematic areas:
Good Scientific Practice and Ethics
The workshops and information sessions in the area of Good Scientific Practice and Ethics encourage doctoral candidates to critically reflect on research processes and outcomes. The focus lies on the responsibility for conducting research in accordance with scientific standards as well as for the use and application of research results.
The workshops
- Good Scientific Practice for Doctoral Candidates and
- Ethics and Responsibility in Science and Society
are mandatory components of all doctoral programs at the Doctoral School NRW.
Personal Organization and Development
The workshops and information sessions in the area of Personal Organization and Development provide inspiration for structuring and coordinating the various roles and tasks doctoral candidates manage during their doctorate. They also support the further development of personal competencies beyond the immediate research context.
Scholarly Communication
Presenting and discussing (planned) research projects, research processes, and research results – both in written and oral form – is an essential part of any academic endeavor: at conferences, in journals, edited volumes, and monographs, on social media, in grant proposals, colloquia, and examinations. The workshops and information sessions in the area of Scholarly Communication help participants further develop these skills.
Career Entry and Career Planning
After completing the doctorate, new career options open up both within and beyond academia. The workshops and information sessions in the area of Career Entry and Career Planning encourage participants to actively explore and shape these opportunities at an early stage.
Mandatory Components of the Doctoral Programs
Researchers are responsible for conducting research according to accepted scientific standards and for the appropriate use and application of research results. Within the doctoral programs, doctoral candidates are therefore encouraged to critically reflect on research processes and outcomes. The workshops “Good Scientific Practice for Doctoral Candidates” and “Ethics and Responsibility in Science and Society” provide essential foundations and are mandatory for all doctoral candidates.
Elective Component of the Doctoral Programs
Within the elective component of the doctoral programs, doctoral candidates may participate in the interdisciplinary qualification offerings of the Doctoral School NRW. This enables them to further develop or sharpen their profile. Whether a given course can be credited depends on the respective doctoral program; prior consultation with one’s advisors is recommended.
Offerings from our Cooperation Partners
As part of our collaborations with our supporting universities of applied sciences, other institutions of higher learning, and projects, doctoral candidates are given the opportunity to participated in additional, external courses, generally at no cost. Whether individual courses can be credited towards the doctoral programs is at the discretion of the respective doctoral examining committee.
