Qualification Program

The Doctoral School NRW offers its doctoral candidates a wide range of qualification opportunities that support their personal, academic, and professional development. All activities are facilitated by experienced instructors. Explore our offerings below.

Our Concept

At the Doctoral School NRW, we consider the doctoral phase not only a period of intensive research but also an important stage for building essential interdisciplinary skills. To support this development, the Doctoral School NRW – partly in cooperation with the participating universities – regularly offers workshops and information sessions in four thematic areas:

Good Scientific Practice and Ethics

Good Scientific Practice and Ethics

The workshops and information sessions in the area of Good Scientific Practice and Ethics encourage doctoral candidates to critically reflect on research processes and outcomes. The focus lies on the responsibility for conducting research in accordance with scientific standards as well as for the use and application of research results.

The workshops

  • Good Scientific Practice for Doctoral Candidates and
  • Ethics and Responsibility in Science and Society

are mandatory components of all doctoral programs at the Doctoral School NRW.

Personal Organization and Development

Personal Organization and Development

The workshops and information sessions in the area of Personal Organization and Development provide inspiration for structuring and coordinating the various roles and tasks doctoral candidates manage during their doctorate. They also support the further development of personal competencies beyond the immediate research context.

Scholarly Communication

Scholarly Communication

Presenting and discussing (planned) research projects, research processes, and research results – both in written and oral form – is an essential part of any academic endeavor: at conferences, in journals, edited volumes, and monographs, on social media, in grant proposals, colloquia, and examinations. The workshops and information sessions in the area of Scholarly Communication help participants further develop these skills.

Career Entry and Career Planning

Career Entry and Career Planning

After completing the doctorate, new career options open up both within and beyond academia. The workshops and information sessions in the area of Career Entry and Career Planning encourage participants to actively explore and shape these opportunities at an early stage.

Certificates of Participation

For workshops offered directly by the Doctoral School NRW (registration via the Doctoral School NRW), we issue certificates of participation. For workshops offered in cooperation with our supporting universities of applied sciences (registration through the respective university), certificates are generally issued by the respective institution. Information sessions are not certified.

Mandatory Components of the Doctoral Programs

Researchers are responsible for conducting research according to accepted scientific standards and for the appropriate use and application of research results. Within the doctoral programs, doctoral candidates are therefore encouraged to critically reflect on research processes and outcomes. The workshops “Good Scientific Practice for Doctoral Candidates” and “Ethics and Responsibility in Science and Society” provide essential foundations and are mandatory for all doctoral candidates.

Good Scientific Practice for Doctoral Candidates

This workshop introduces the fundamental principles of good scientific practice during the doctoral phase, in accordance with the guidelines of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Participation is mandatory for all doctoral candidates enrolled in the doctoral programs.

Ethics and Responsibility in Science and Society

This workshop presents normative and ethical standards for scientific research and offers an introduction to the philosophical foundations of ethics in research contexts. Participation is mandatory for all doctoral candidates enrolled in the doctoral programs.

Eligibility for Participation

Participation in our workshops is reserved for members of the Doctoral School NRW.

Cooperative doctoral members are also warmly invited to participate.

Mandatroy Components

Individual doctoral programs may include additional mandatory components not listed here. Details can be found in the respective program descriptions.

Elective Component of the Doctoral Programs

Within the elective component of the doctoral programs, doctoral candidates may participate in the interdisciplinary qualification offerings of the Doctoral School NRW. This enables them to further develop or sharpen their profile. Whether a given course can be credited depends on the respective doctoral program; prior consultation with one’s advisors is recommended.

Eligibility for Participation

Participation in our workshops is reserved for members of the Doctoral School NRW.

Cooperative doctoral members are also warmly invited to participate.

Offerings from our Cooperation Partners

As part of our collaborations with our supporting universities of applied sciences, other institutions of higher learning, and projects, doctoral candidates are given the opportunity to participated in additional, external courses, generally at no cost. Whether individual courses can be credited towards the doctoral programs is at the discretion of the respective doctoral examining committee.

“Fachwissen zum Mittag”: Online Lecture Series on Scholarly Publishing

In the online lecture series Fachwissen zum Mittag offered by the library of FH Dortmund, experts provide concise insights into key subject areas. The series features online lectures on various topics related to scholarly publishing, typically lasting 45 minutes. Afterwards, there is optional time for discussion. All sessions begin at 12:00 p.m.

Doctoral candidates who are members of the Doctoral School NRW may participate free of charge (registration as “external participants” via the form on the website).

Advising and orientation for Aspiring Professors

As part of the project PROForward@HRW, the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences offers various advisory, orientation, and qualification offerings designed to support individuals on their path toward a professorship at a university of applied sciences. Doctoral candidates of the Doctoral School NRW also have the opportunity to receive personalized guidance in a one-on-one conversation tailored to their individual situation. To arrange an orientation meeting, feel free to contact: nextstep@hs-ruhrwest.de.

Open Consultation Hour on Diversity Issues in Academic Contexts

Universities and academic practice are shaped by the personal and disciplinary diversity of the people involved. For instructors and prospective professors, it is therefore helpful to be familiar with key concepts of the diversity discourse in order to understand their own role as teachers or researchers, the individual challenges that may arise, and to receive guidance on designing diversity-responsive academic environments.

The open consultation hour provides an opportunity to strengthen one’s own diversity competence using concrete case examples and to address personal points of contact with diversity—such as uncertainties, obstacles, experiences of discrimination, boundaries, and perspectives—in a confidential setting. To register, please send a message using your official Doctoral School NRW or university email address to: nextstep@hs-ruhrwest.de.

hdw nrw Network – Higher Education Didactics

The hdw nrw Network offers continuing education in higher education didactics and is an association of all universities of applied sciences in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to workshops, the network also provides opportunities for exchange with other instructors, for example in various (subject-didactic) working groups. For instructors with special responsibilities, research staff, and adjunct faculty, the associated costs may be covered by their university. To do so, you will need a cost coverage statement. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at: bielefeld@hdw-nrw.de.

Further information on the program and on booking information can be found on the network’s website.
