Prof. Dr. Mike Althaus (HS Bonn-Rhein-Sieg): Molecular Diversity or Molecular Chaos? Epithelial Sodium Channel Variants in Health and Disease

Epithelial sodium channels (ENaCs) are ion channels that play a critical role in sodium and water homeostasis, and their malfunctions are associated with diseases such as hypertension, salt-wasting syndromes, cystic fibrosis and pulmonary oedema. ENaCs are composed of different subunit assemblies, which confer distinct functional properties. This presentation will highlight recent advances in understanding the molecular, biophysical, and pharmacological properties of ENaC subunit assemblies and their potential physiological functions. The talk will also examine ENaC gene polymorphisms and variants and their possible clinical implications.
